The Brief
On Walden's Pond is an editorial spread that brings Henry David Thoreau's words face to face with a dramatic owl portrait. The left column is a full-bleed black panel — the owl's glowing red eyes staring out beneath a vertically rotated '1854' and a bold white headline. The right column opens with a centered serif title, then drops into a two-column justified excerpt from Walden. A dark blockquote overlay interrupts the columns with Thoreau's most famous line — 'I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately' — grounding the visual drama in the text's quiet philosophy. A small forest-path photograph closes the spread, captioned with its source, tying the piece back to the woods it celebrates.
Process
- 01Built the spread around a high-contrast split: a black full-bleed owl panel against a clean white text page.
- 02Set the excerpt in a two-column justified serif to echo the feel of a printed periodical.
- 03Overlaid a dark blockquote with Thoreau's signature line to create a visual interruption that anchors the spread's meaning.
